Certified Master Teacher CMT®

Exam Summary

The CMT® exam is a 2-hour test administered under testing conditions at a test delivery center. There are 3 domains and 100 test items. A passing score is 80%. Candidates will have opportunities for subsequent exam attempts. However, the exam retake fee is $89. Some exam items are intended for internal research and analysis purposes. Such questions do not count toward the candidate’s score and candidates will not know which questions are solely for research and analysis.

CMT® Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK)

The CBOK represents core knowledge and competencies in the field of education. This CBOK is determined through rigorous collection of data and inquiries from subject matter experts regarding the nature of the profession, the industry and its stakeholders. The CBOK consists of three domains. These domains and their respective weightings in the CMT® Program are listed below.

Instruction and Learning (40%)

This domain is a survey of pedagogical knowledge applicable to grades K-12 which includes extensive findings from the ever-expanding educational literature. Candidates will demonstrate knowledge of instructional strategies, models, processes and techniques. In addition to effective instructional models and practices that align with the curricula, topics include the learning environment; emotional needs and special needs of students; discipline, motivation, engagement and risk-taking; professional reflection; the use of technology to facilitate learning and student evaluation systems.

Curriculum (30%)

This domain takes into account curriculum theory and development for grades K-12. Candidates will demonstrate knowledge of curriculum theory in historical context, curriculum design and an acute understanding of the foundations leading to contemporary K-12 curricula to include the use of test data analytics. Candidates will demonstrate knowledge of leading curriculum approaches and the use of digitally delivered curricula.

Education Policy (30%)

This domain broadly covers public education law and relevant foundational law; school and district leadership which consists of many areas including management principles, student records, school internal capacity and instructional core, school finance and economics, school structure and management, and school models; teacher supervision and evaluation which establishes theoretical underpinnings of these two roles and provides an exposition of contemporary practices.

Exam Preparation

Accreditor’s self-paced exam preparation content that uses an inquiry-based approach. Our exam content includes extensive practice problems organized in blocks of 56 quizzes including answers and explanations. Therefore, self-directed candidates may proceed at an accelerated pace. This material is provided in the application fee and there is no additional expense to receive it after a candidate’s application is accepted. Exam questions may be updated from time to time.
